The Nashoba Valley is a term applied to several towns in North Central Massachusetts located near the Nashua River. The area prides itself in the availability of conservation lands for various outdoor activities both on land and on water. There are also a wide variety of athletic leagues for adults and youths.

Although mostly residential, each town has its own distinctive features. Groton, with its many farms, offers wide-open spaces and panoramic views. Pepperell, once an industrial town with its many mills along the Nashua River, is now a bedroom community.

Shirley, Ayer, and Devens, which once serviced the military stationed at Fort Devens, now have become attractive for their well placed homes and convenient commutes.

Harvard, known for its upscale homes, also has a rich Shaker heritage and is home to the Fruitlands Museum with its own unique past.

The area libraries are very active and provide computer use, classes, and programs for children, teens and adults. Each town also has various civic-minded groups such as Historical Societies, Women's Clubs, Lions clubs, and Rotaries. Groton, Townsend, Pepperell and Ayer have Senior Centers that conduct regular activities for the Seniors.

Many of the towns have regionalized their school systems. The Groton-Dunstable Regional School System educates the students from those towns. The recently built high school is located very close to the town line of both towns.

The North Middlesex Regional District covers the towns of Pepperell, Townsend and Ashby. The High School is located at the Townsend-Pepperell line.

The towns of Ayer and Shirley recently decided to regionalize. A new middle school was built in Shirley for Ayer and Shirley students with the high school remaining in Ayer.

Besides the local shopping and dining, there are malls and many choices of chain restaurants in both nearby Leominster and Nashua, New Hampshire.

The picturesque hills of the area lend themselves to growth of apples. Many future homeowners discover the area while coming to pick or purchase apples in the fall.
